Boating Safety Guidelines To Follow

by Adriana Noton

Boating safety is crucial so that each trip is successful and nobody gets hurt. Drugs cannot be taken, and safety equipment needs to be kept on the boat and in reach. Weather must be monitored continually and someone must be told where the destination of a trip is. Boats should never be overloaded and all rules and regulations always followed.

No drugs or alcohol can be used before or during a boat ride. The results of alcohol are made stronger with wind, vibration, noise, glare, and sun exposure while on board. Further, in 2008 thirty-five percent of all boating deaths were found to be linked to drugs or alcohol. Of all reported accidents, twenty percent had the same cause as well.

The correct safety equipment needs to be on board always and routinely maintained. Every individual should wear a life jacket that correctly fits. Fire extinguishers are crucial for safety, particularly in boats that have closing compartments or any false doors. Always check that it is charged and within easy access.

Boat lights must be checked and extra batteries stored on board. Emergency supply kits are also necessary. These must include flares, maps, first aid kits, and floating pouches. Anchor inspection needs to proceed each trip and someone must know how it is properly used. If not done properly anchoring can cause fatalities.

Unfriendly weather is another reason for concern. Therefore, the weather must be continually monitored at all times. A radio should be accessible so that warnings of incoming problems can be heard. Signs for concern include flashes of lightening, shifts in the winds, and rough water. When bad weather is confirmed, move to get off the water as quickly as possible. Doing this minimizes time spent waiting for other water craft in lines. Staying on the water and being exposed to cold waters can also increase risks of hypothermia.

In case of unanticipated events, always make sure someone is briefed on the destination of trips and the planned return time. At the beginning of each trip following a refueling, open all hatches. Check if fumes are present before starting the engine. If fumes are detected the engine cannot be turned on.

Check destination areas for any rules that are in place. There could be different requirements from the area of origins. Always make sure that registration is current and that the boat is displaying a sticker from the right year.

Never overload a boat. The weight capacity listed should never be exceeded. For the best safety while launching, remove all straps and covers before in line to launch. It is also recommended to have all equipment inside before making it to the ramp. This equipment must also be checked for functioning and be plugged in. It is best to have a person holding the line and handling the boat from a pier while waiting to launch.

Boating safety is critical for all on board. Examples of this include not doing drugs, having the correct equipment, and monitoring the weather. Every rule and regulation must be followed always and boats should never be overloaded past their capacity.
