Extraordinary Family Holidays

by Ambrose Trevelyan

If you're getting bored of family holidays that revolve around going to the beach and not getting up to much else, perhaps you should think about doing something a bit more alternative the next time you go on holiday? There are plenty of ways to spice up your holiday and do something a little outside the norm. Some of these suggestions may initially appear a little costly, but you can always find great deals if you look around.

Firstly, the myth that city breaks are unsuitable for children needs to be exposed. Younger children are perfectly capable of enjoying the cultural delights that many cities have to offer. A city like Rome can fire a child's imagination with relics from the past at every corner. Many museums and popular attractions also have dedicated areas for children now. A good idea is to tag a city break onto the beginning or end of a more traditional holiday, as they are extremely interesting but rarely relaxing!

Another great holiday idea is skiing - something that many people consider too expensive. Many of the best skiing destinations are in Europe, and many are cheaper than you'd expect. Furthermore, affordable, quality skiing equipment can easily be bought or hired. If you're all beginners you'll probably find that the kids pick it up faster than mum and dad, but it's fun for all. And unlike holidays where you're sitting around not doing much apart from eating and drinking, you're much more likely to lose than gain weight.

Wild animals fascinate many children, but few will get to see them outside of a cage or television set. A safari holiday then is a great way for the whole family to have a real adventure. Kenya is one of the most popular destinations in Africa for people to go on safari and can consequently be quite expensive, but other locations can provide just as much wildlife at lower prices.

While the traditional family holiday can be a safe bet, a week in the Serengeti or on the Alps can be unforgettable. And there's no reason why if you're looking for something alternative you can't come up with plenty of other ideas. From camping to caving and everything else, there's plenty for families who want to try something a little different.
