From Meager Beginnings To Every Day Uses, How Power Tools Have Developed

by Adriana Noton

The construction of homes and buildings in the towns have always been a tedious and back breaking job. Long ago, the lumber would be cut and milled to create all the walls, floor and roofs for these buildings. The townspeople would use hammers and hand saws to construct these buildings which would make them very tired at the end of the day. After years of this hard work, a company discovered a way to make this work just a little easier. In the late 1800's power tools were finally invented.

Early inventions were very crude. At the time these instruments were cumbersome and bulky and were not very easy to use. Most were created simply by adding a motor the hand tool which would give it a little more strength. They were also expensive to purchase and not always as reliable as they needed to be.

But as time passed, they became more refined. In the early 1900's the electric drill was given a pistol type grip, which made it easier to handle. The saw was given a more powerful motor and a larger blade, however this made it quite expensive to manufacture.

Due to the first world war, several new designs were needed. An instrument that could be used in the water was needed to help with repairs to the ships. When World War II came around, a new nail gun was designed. This took the form of the weapons that soldiers were using in the battlefield.

Eventually, in the late 1950's tools that were cordless were being sold. The very first design used compressed air cartridges for their power. Shortly after that, companies began creating families of instruments that could be powered by an interchangeable battery.

There are a number of companies today that are constantly improving and creating new designs. Festool, Bosch Tools, and Milwaukee Tools are probably some of the most recognized in the industry. But there are many more companies that are working to create the most powerful and innovative designs on the market.

There are different types of devices for practically any job that needs to be done. Most construction jobs are now completed using this new type of equipment. There are also tools that can be used for completing drywall jobs. Visit any construction site and they will be seen on the site.

Many times in construction of building products today, it is found that not only do they have more horsepower, but they are also connected to computers. Laser designs have made it possible to create a much more accurate cut and assembly of wall panels, floor panels, and trusses. With the use of the power tool as well as the computerized graphics, it makes it possible to virtually build every part of a building on the plant floor. These parts are then moved to the job site and connected in a short period of time.

Although the first power tools were awkward and cumbersome, they have grown and improved greatly over the years. Now they are in almost every homeowners toolbox and used in practically every job. They have made life much easier for the contractor as well as the homeowner.
