Metal Buildings Can Become Green-Movement Homes

by Adrianna Noton

Metal buildings are becoming more popular as people realize how inexpensive and versatile they can be. Also, the industry is expanding because of new technology and design capabilities. Once thought of only as sheds for storage, garages, farm buildings or water-craft protection and airplane hangers, metal buildings are now being pioneered as green-movement homes.

When these structures are not uses entirely for storage and, therefore, do not require complicated interior additions, such as plumbing or heating, they can be constructed by people who enjoy doing DYI projects. Otherwise, constructing them would be better off if left to professional contractors and sub-contractors. Erecting a home which would need several rooms and a good support system would be an example of a time when a specialist would be hired.

Steel is recyclable, so metal building homes are considered to be very eco-friendly. In addition, they cost less to build. They are strong and very resilient to all types of weather. Steel structured homes are sensible and are particularly so when open-concept homes seem to be becoming more popular.

The green movement seems to be inspiring more and more open-concept style homes. These homes can be constructed fairly inexpensively and seem not to require as much gas, oil or hydro for heating or cooling as do traditional homes. Consumers and contractors are moving toward underground thermal systems or water-tubing systems alternatives for their new homes.

These types of heating/cooling systems work best in open-concept homes. Steel roofs, which are available in several attractive colors, are proving to be very functional as well - especially when looking at climate control capabilities.

Rain falling on a steel roof has a very peaceful feeling. When rain water falls off these roofs into barrels or cisterns, it is still clean and there is no toxic residue contaminating it. It can be safely used to water lawns and gardens. Sun-roofs and solar panels which serve to enhance the environmentally friendly building are easy to install.

Constructing a metal home is far less expensive that more traditional methods for which prices seem to be consistently escalating. Steel homes lend themselves to open-concept designs because there is less need to interior support beams, reducing construction costs. Window space can be well-taken advantage of as well.

Homes constructed from metal do not have to look like storage places or barns. The exterior can be made to look like stone or brick and, on the plus side, will not decay or deteriorate over time. These metal look-alikes are easy to keep clean and will maintain their pleasant aesthetic look over time.

These exterior steel facades are beneficial in at least three ways. First of all, the metal layers add another means of temperature control. In addition, they are not difficult to clean. Finally, when desired, the most exterior layer can be simply peeled away and a new look applied.

Metal building uses are becoming far more sophisticated than in days gone by. Rather than being thought of only as places for storage, they are becoming popular as comfortable, economic, and environmentally friendly homes.
