The best destinations for a weekend break

by Patricia Guntwistle

There are countless reasons why you might opt for a short weekend break away. Maybe you just want to save on some money, or maybe your boss is being stingy with the holiday hours he is giving you. Or perhaps you want to surprise someone special with a romantic weekend somewhere special. Whatever it is, it can be difficult to choose exactly where to spend such a short amount of time.

Rome is the perfect place for a weekend visit. Within it there is some of the most glorious ancient architecture and thousands of years of history to experience, along with vibrant string of cafs to lounge around in, and some great opportunities to shop. Though it is a big and busy city, there is a king of tranquillity to be found in some of the quaint cafs and amongst the ancient walls of the coliseum.

The amount of attention that Paris has received in films, books, the media and just from people who have been going on about it, can serve to put you off and make you assume that it is over hyped. The reality is, however, that it really is as amazing as everyone makes out; the Eiffel Tower just as impressive, Notre Dame just as humbling, and La Louvre just as beautiful, and the city as a whole has a tangible romantic atmosphere that is unrivalled. This is the only place you should take someone you care about for a weekend.

Another place to take a hopeless romantic is Venice, Italy. It has intricate network of beautiful canals, lined with quant bars and cafs and excellent restaurants. Floating gently down on of the canals in a gondolier is amazing, and wherever you get off you are sure to find culture and beauty that will take your breath away.

This article should have made obvious that the best places to go for weekend breaks are big cities. This is because they are complicated and compact areas that have so much culture and activity packed into such a small area that even a weekend is enough to experience so much.
