Top 5 Recommended Resorts in Tenerife

Playa de las Americas. This is a resort which has really grown from its humble beginnings as merely a handful of hotels. They were based around a man-made beach made out of sand which was imported from the Sahara desert. However, it is now one of the biggest and most popular resorts in Europe. It already stretches far but there are plans for it to extend further, to the West.

La Oratava: This town was born in the sixteenth century and remains today as one of the most natural towns in Tenerife. It largely comprises of parks and squares and there is also an old historic centre, which is a national monument; as is the Concepcin Parish Church. There are other examples of beautiful architecture as well as some wonderful museums, shops and cafes. This place has a fascinating history; it is set in a banana plantation, which has the same name as the town. The original inhabitants of the town were known as the Guanches.

Santa Cruz: The capital of Tenerife since 1723, now with almost one third of the entire island living here. It is a typically modern Spanish town and is great for shopping, particularly at Calle Castillo. The streets are not always filled with overly exciting spectacles, but they are certainly very attractive. There are some wonderful attractions, such as museums and galleries and there is a wonderful auditorium by the harbour, which is rather resemblent of the Sydney Opera House.

Santa Cruz. The long-time capital of Tenerife, this town comprises almost a third of the people in the island. The town is modern especially in terms of its ability to cater to shoppers and it offers a great shopping experience. Attractions are never too far way as are the many galleries and museums. One of the more popular attractions is the auditorium by the harbour which is not too dissimilar to the Sydney Opera House.

Los Cristianos. More of a haven for commercial-loving tourists than culture vultures but if you wish to tourism to the extreme, it is certainly a more viable option than Playa de las Americas. It isn't actually identifiable as to where one begins and the other ends but once you are in the middle of either resort, it will be ore than obvious, especially at night-time.
